About Us /Amdanom Ni

Hello, we are St Grwst Church. Born in the early 15th Century and located in the heart of Wales in the tranquil town of Llanrwst. Our walls have seen 550 years of rich history and religion and are the home to many a story, legend and myth. Come visit us and lose yourself in our stories, beautiful architecture and breathtaking surroundings.

Come to a service, come to an event, come for a cup of tea, come for the friendship!

When you enter St Grwst's Church, you'll find the following Welcome message near the door.

We extend a special welcome to those who are single, married, divorced, widowed, straight, gay, questioning, black, white, well-heeled or down at heel. We especially welcome wailing babies and excited toddlers. We welcome you whether you can sing like Bryn Terfel or just growl quietly to yourself. You’re welcome here if you’re ‘just browsing,’ just woken up or just got out of prison. We don’t care if you’re more Christian than the Archbishop of Wales, or haven’t been to church since Christmas ten years ago. We extend a special welcome to those who are over 60 but not grown up yet, and to teenagers who are growing up too fast. We welcome keep-fit mums, football dads, starving artists, tree-huggers, latte-sippers, vegetarians, junk-food eaters. We welcome those who are in recovery or still addicted. We welcome you if you’re having problems, are down in the dumps or don’t like ‘organised religion.’ We offer a welcome to those who think the earth is flat, work too hard, don’t work, can’t spell, or are here because granny is visiting and wanted to come to Church. We welcome those who are inked, pierced, both or neither. We offer a special welcome to those who could use a prayer right now, had religion shoved down their throat as kids or got lost looking for the Co-op and wound up here by mistake. We welcome pilgrims, tourists, seekers, doubters… and you!

Cronfa Dreftadaeth / Heritage Fund

Thanks to players of the National Lottery, we were awarded a grant of £707,700 from the National Lottery Heritage Fund. This has provided the vast majority of the funding which enabled us to embark on a major project to restore and reorder St Grwst's Church in 2019/2020.

The new St Grwst's has a lovely new stone floor with underfloor heating, flexible seating layouts, a kitchen and toilets, whilst retaining the historic rood screen, choirstalls and beautifully restored Gwydir Chapel.

It is a place for the whole community to enjoy -

a place for people of all faiths, and none.

Volunteer with Us /
Gwirfoddoli gyda Ni

Volunteers are at the heart of everything we do!

Pictured above are members of the Project Steering Group - L-R Gwyneth Morris-Jones (Gift Aid Secretary), Menna Gerrard (Diocesan Advisory Committee), Jeremy Wong (Architect), Ruth McKew (Project Manager), Olwen John (Secretary), Rev'd Sarah Hildreth-Osborn (Rector), Jon Richmond (Business Development Officer), Bleddyn Hughes (Churchwarden) and Janet Pierce (Churchwarden).

St Grwst's Church and the community of Llanrwst have been working together for over 550 years - and we want to ensure that St Grwst's remains at the heart of the local community for years to come! Why not come and help us? You don't have to be a church member, and there's something for everybody to get involved with.

So, what can you do? Well, we have the following roles:

Welcome Volunteer

The first point of contact for visitors to the church. You will volunteer on key dates throughout the year to provide a warm welcome for people, and direct them to the various interpretation around the building.

Hospitality Team Volunteer

On selected days in conjunction with events taking place in church, we will be offering refreshments to visitors, such as tea and quality cake. You will help run our kitchen and catering facility.

Tour Guide and Interpretation Volunteer

Tour Guide volunteers will be trained to provide tours around the church and chapel for pre-booked groups. You will receive training in how to deliver an insightful and engaging tour, tailored for different groups as appropriate.

Learning and Events Volunteer

Our Learning and Events volunteers support the work of our Business Development Officer, facilitating visits by groups and schools, and helping to prepare, set up and deliver activities and events for key target audiences. You will receive training on working with young people, schools and families.

Website and Social Media Volunteer

You'll be familiar with social media and help to provide content and updates to our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts, and to develop content for our website which may involve taking photos and creating short videos.

Conservation Volunteer

We are the current custodians of historic monuments and fittings dating back many hundreds of years. You'll be involved in the ongoing care and maintenance of them, monitoring the environment within the church, making regular checks to ensure that monuments are stable. Volunteers will also learn how to clean and protect church objects, fixtures and fittings.

Churchyard Volunteer

Our riverside churchyard needs regular maintenance and weeding of the flower beds, and our churchyard volunteers will help to keep them looking attractive and appealing to visitors. As well as gardening, you'll assist in carrying out checks to make sure the gravestones are stable.
